SE0309 – La musique d’Arthur Schwartz (1900-1984)

L’émission de cette semaine sera consacré au compositeur Arthur Schwartz, l’un des grands de Tin Pan Alley et se terminera dans un feeling plus country.

 

Schwartz a composé plusieurs standards du American songbook tant apprécié par les jazzmen dont « You and the Night and the Music », « I Guess I’ll Have to Change My Plan » et « That’s Entertainment ».

Des connaissances comme Lorenz Hart et George Gershwin l’ont encouragé au cours des années 20 à composer et, en 1928, il rencontre Howard Dietz, le parolier avec lequel il produit son matériel le plus réussi. Schwartz a été initié aux paroles de chanson de Dietz alors qu’il assistait au spectacle Merry Go Round à Broadway et, pris d’une telle envie d’écrire sur sa mélodie, Schwartz a supplié Dietz d’écrire sur sa mélodie.

Après avoir quitté définitivement la profession d’avocat en 1928, Schwartz se consacre entièrement à l’écriture de chansons. La première partition de Schwartz et Dietz a fait ses débuts en 1929 à Broadway, intitulée « The Little Show », qui comprenait « I’ve Made a Habit of You » et « I Guess I’ll Have to Change My Plan ». Parmi les autres productions de Broadway auxquelles Schwartz a contribué, citons The Second Little Show, Princess Charming, Three’s a Crowd, The Band Wagon, Flying Colors, Revenge With Music, At Home Abroad, Virginia, Between the Devil, Stars in Your Eyes, Park Avenue, Inside USA, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, By the Beautiful Sea, The Gay Life et Jennie.

Les chansons de Schwartz ont également été incluses dans plusieurs films à succès d’Hollywood, notamment That Girl From Paris, Under Your Spell, Navy Blues, Thank Your Lucky Stars, The Time, the Place and the Girl, Excuse My Dust, Dangerous When Wet et You’re Never Too Young.

 

Schwartz a reçu deux nominations aux Oscars pour la meilleure chanson : la première en 1944 pour la chanson « They’re Either Too Young or Too Old » du film Thank Your Lucky Stars ; la seconde en 1948 pour la chanson « A Gal in Calico » du film The Time, the Place and the Girl. Le plus grand succès de Schwartz, « That’s Entertainment » du film The Band Wagon, a peut-être été récompensé par l’ASCAP Award for Most Performed Feature Film Standard en 1990.
